Nigel Atkinson received his doctoral degree, studying yeast RNA processing, from Hershey Medical Center at Penn State University. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied Drosophila neurogenetics and cloned the first example of a BK type Ca2+-activated K+ channel gene.
