Members in the laboratory of R. Adron Harris investigate the structure and function of ion channels with emphasis on the molecular mechanisms responsible for alcohol and drug actions. They are defining the acute actions of alcohol and other drugs on cell signaling as well as the long-term actions that result in tolerance and dependence. Additionally, they study the neurochemical basis for genetic differences in drug response. These experiments use genetically-modified mice that vary in susceptibility to drug intoxication and dependence. The group also studies anesthetic drugs, pursuing molecular mechanisms responsible for the unconsciousness and amnesia that these drugs produce.
