The Homer Lindsey Bruce & Fred Murphy Jones Endowed Fellowships

The Homer Lindsey Bruce & Fred Murphy Jones Endowed Fellowships in were established in 1999. These fellowships are designated for supporting graduate research in substance use disorders and associated conditions. Our awardees' research may include clinical or preclinical studies focused on mechanisms of drug action, neuroadaptation to repeated substance use, treatment, outcomes, or risk factors.
The fellowship provides awardees with funds for annual stipend, tuition, travel allowance, and medical/dental insurance.

Fellow Requirements

Once appointed, Bruce/Jones fellows must complete the following:

  • Submit an NRSA proposal before the end of their second year of funding to be reappointed for a third year
  • Attend weekly WCAAR meetings
  • Present original research or techniques at a WCAAR weekly meeting annually
    • Scheduled by Communications Coordinator, Susan Cushman (scushman@austin.utexas.edu)
    • WCAAR staff will elicit presentation feedback from audience to be shared with fellows
  • Lead an Alcohol Journal Club session annually

Taxes for Fellows

US Citizens

The Bruce Jones Fellowships are taxable income and NOT withheld from the monthly payment. In the Spring, fellows will receive a 1098T and not a W2.

International students

Taxes ARE withheld for International students.
