The Homer Lindsey Bruce & Fred Murphy Jones Endowed Fellowships in were established in 1999. These fellowships are designated for supporting graduate research in substance use disorders and associated conditions. Our awardees' research may include clinical or preclinical studies focused on mechanisms of drug action, neuroadaptation to repeated substance use, treatment, outcomes, or risk factors

Bruce Jones Fellowship Application
Applications are closed for the 2025-2026 academic year.
The deadline for AY25-26 was May 30, 2025. Applications for AY26-27 will be available in late Spring 2026.
Research Criteria
Applicant research may include:
- Clinical or preclinical studies focused on mechanisms of drug action
- Neuroadaptation to repeated substance use
- Risk factors
- Genetic
- Comorbid mental illness
- Early life trauma
- Family factors
- PTSD
- Outcomes
- Treatment

Fellow Requirements
Once appointed, Bruce/Jones fellows must complete the following:
- Submit an NRSA proposal before the end of their second year of funding to be reappointed for a third year
- Attend weekly WCAAR meetings
- Wednesdays from 10-11am
- In-person in HDB or SEAY library & virtual
- Subscribe to waggoner-center-faculty-staff@utlists.utexas.edu for updates
- Present original research or techniques at a WCAAR weekly meeting annually
- Scheduled by Communications Coordinator, Susan Cushman (scushman@austin.utexas.edu)
- WCAAR staff will elicit presentation feedback from audience to be shared with fellows
- Lead an Alcohol Journal Club session annually

Taxes for Fellows
US Citizens
The Bruce Jones Fellowships are taxable income and NOT withheld from the monthly payment. In the Spring, fellows will receive a 1098T and not a W2.
International students
Taxes ARE withheld for International students.
